Thoughts on the Border Wall.

I think I figured it out.

The border wall is a “Baby On Board” placard for the car window of the country.

The border wall makes some people feel comfortable and safe from invading foreigners, in the same way that a “Baby On Board” sign in the car makes some people comfortable and safe that people will somehow drive more safely around them.

But, here's the thing: a “Baby On Board” sign doesn’t actually make people drive more safely around you. Similarly, the border wall will not stop people from crossing the border.

With approximately 200 tunnels (and some estimates reaching as high as 2000) discovered on the Arizona and California borders over the years since a fence went up; some of them 70 feet deep with electricity, lighting, rail tracks, and even elevators(!), like one discovered under Tijuana and San Diego in 2016, there are too many innovative forces at work to think that a physical barrier will do anything at all to change how many people cross the border. Many of these tunnels originate in warehouses, abandoned stores, even an abandoned KFC in San Luis, AZ, and are nearly impossible to detect. Many of the tunnels have been closed on the US side, but remain open in Mexico. They are built not so much by people wishing to cross the border to the US to escape Mexico, but by well-financed drug cartels and human trafficking rings, and people trying to enter the country just to escape Mexico make of a percentage of that traffic.

In addition, most of the people that are in the country illegally entered the country legally; through an airport, and simply let their visa expire.

A “Baby On Board” sign is a smug, self-satisfying piece of theater, with no practical effect whatsoever; except on people willing to abide by their restrictions. Like the border wall. It's just theater.
